Biomimicry

Biomim.jpg

One interesting area of design and engineering is biomimicry. This discipline studies nature to improve the designs of objects, structures or materials. Eiji Nakatsu an engineer and birdwatcher from Japan used his knowledge of kingfisher birds, penguins and owls to improve the bullet train.

By imitating the kingfisher’s beak, the penguins belly, and the owls feathers the bullet train travels 10% faster, uses 15% less electricity, and is quieter.
